Tribal Belly Dance Biography
Joanne began her dance training with tap, jazz, and ballet in New York City, where she was born and raised and continued her dance training with modern and ballroom dancing in college. She discovered belly dancing in 1995 on the west coast and immediately fell in love with the art form. Joanne moved to Chicago in 1999 to get her Master degree in Social Work at the University of Chicago while continuing her love of belly dancing.
Joanne's grandparents were from Turkey and she wanted to honor them by using their last name as her professional stage name - Abrevaya. The namesake is pronounced Ab- rev- EYE- ah.
In 2007, Abrevaya became certified in the Suhaila School of Dance, a program dedicated to enhancing technique and maintaining the integrity of this dance. In 2008, she earned both Level I and Level II certification in Hadia's Teacher Training, which focuses on applied anatomy, the learning environment, and processing styles.
Abrevaya has been a dedicated dance instructor since 2002. Her goal as an instructor is to help her students establish a strong foundation in technique, foster the growth of their own personal style of self expression, and to provide a fun & safe environment.
Abrevaya continues her growth as a dancer and instructor by taking
master-level workshops so that she can offer her students the highest quality of instruction.She has taken advanced-level seminars with renowned artists including:
Amaya, Aziza, Bahaia, Jim Boz, Bozenka, Rachel Brice, Dalia Carella, Cassandra, Eva Cernak, Horacio & Beata Cifuentes, Dahlena, Tamlyn Dallal, Delilah, Fahtiem, Ava Fleming, Hadia, Raqia Hassan, Jasmin Jahal, Jillina, Momo Kadous, Kami Liddle, Karim Nagi, Mona N'Wal, Morocco, Princess Farhana, Hossam Ramzy & Serena, Yasmina Ramsy, Shoshanna, Yousry Sharif, Suhaila Salimpour, Amir Thaleb, Vashti, Venus, Virginia, & Zafira
Abrevaya has performed nationwide and currently teaches and performs in Des Plaines and Chicago, IL.
