Harem pants are worn under a skirt, or worn alone. Typically they are very full, measuring six to twelve inches or more larger than measurement of hip and thigh. Each half is a single piece with no side seam.The pants keep the legs (and underwear!) covered during floorwork, spins, and outdoor breezes, as well as for those who prefer to cover legs for whatever reason. Even sheer pants appear more modest than bare legs.

Cheap and Easy Tip: Try using a pair of pull-on pants several sizes too large for you, if you can find some in a suitable fabric (see below — not doubleknit!), perhaps in a secondhand store. After adjusting the leg length and cutting the waist lower, sew casings at hip and ankle and thread elastic through as described below. Then adjust elastic until you get a satisfactory fit. Trim if desired.

For those with more time, the classic harem pants are easy to sew because once your pattern is perfected, only two seams and two casings are required. I suggest starting with a generously sized pattern piece — the pants can always be taken in if you wish. Or make a mock-up of the pants in cheap muslin, perfect the fit, then use this muslin as a pattern for your costume fabric.

Often the front and back of the pants are exactly the same. My version has a slightly smaller front that dips an inch lower than the back, to avoid bunchy material in front. But if you want to skip that step, fold my pattern in half vertically to make a pattern piece that is exactly the same front and back.

This sounds like a beautiful design, but I wouldn't rely on threaded strands of beads, especially not on elastic, to support a bra. It would be too easy to break them (or stretch the elastic out) no matter what you use. The bra needs to be connected to the collar with several strips of sturdy quarter inch or several more eighth-inch grosgrain ribbons. When you're satisfied the ribbons are sewed on very securely (practice in the costume!), then bead the ribbons directly, or sew the finished strands of beads onto the ribbon. The ribbon should be concealed, so it will look just as impressive.

I have made a strapless bra top and a matching collar. What I want to do to create support for the top is connect to the collar with strands of beadwork. What should I use to do this? Should I use elastic beading thread, regular beading thread or something else? I will be using sead beads in these strands.

Kathryn is a firm believer that to progress in Bellydance you need
to continually challenge yourself. Kathryn attends regular workshops
in the UK and Cairo to develop her dance.

I am an experienced teacher and performer of middle eastern dance.
I run weekly Classes in Basingstoke for Beginner, Intermediate and
Advanced students, organise workshops and provide private tuition.

I have always enjoyed dancing and from an early age have studied various
dance disciplines including Ballet, Hip Hop, Salsa and Flamenco finally settling
on Middle Eastern Dance, attending regular classes and workshops in the UK
and Cairo with many famous national and international teachers and performers.
Visits to Cairo and regular tuition from master teachers, choreographers and
performers ensure I keep in touch with trends, and continue with my
dance development.

In 2005 I collaborated in a joint venture with two fellow professional belly dancers
and El Amiraat was born. Our joint venture of classes and performance brought
Cairo to Reading with regular performances to live Arabic music at a local restaurant.

I appreciate that not everyone wants to perform professionally, but may still want
to perform for family and friends for the sheer fun in doing so. In 2006 I began
organising informal 'Belly Dance Parties' where students could get
a taste of performing in groups and as soloists to gain experience of performance in a friendly
environment.

In 2007 I organised a larger more public event, Oshaak El Neel, which took place
in Reading Town Hall and included performances from Tribal Dancers, Bollywood
dancers and a variety of modern and classical egyptian dance.
